The Iowa DOT is looking for a dependable, driven applicant to fill a key position supporting customers of DOT programs, such as law enforcement, county treasurers and licensed vehicle dealer. This Clerk Specialist will conduct a variety of routine transactions pertaining to dealer licensing, vehicle rate setting, vehicle record maintenance, abandoned vehicle reimbursement claims, and emergency vehicle authorizations among other duties. Be part of a cohesive team with proven success in providing critical support to necessary vehicle transactions across the state.
Location: Central Programs Bureau, Motor Vehicle Division, Ankeny, Iowa
Shift: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
Pay Range: $16.60 to $24.38 an hour
What you will need to succeed in this position:
- Experience working large volumes of transactions in an IT transactional environment
- Ability to interpret laws, rules, policies, and procedures
- Customer service skills to handle issue resolution and external contact
- Ability to provide technical support through phone, e-mail, and written instruction
- Attention to detail
Here is what you will do in this position:
- Fulfill a variety of services for customers of DOT programs, including dealer licensing and permits, vehicle registration rates, county treasurer transaction assistance, and other products
- Work with customers in-person, by phone, by e-mail and letter to identify and resolve problems
- Maintain security and privacy of records
- Assist management in identifying process improvements

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Experience equal to three years of full-time clerical or closely related work;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting graduation from high school, G.E.D. equivalency or satisfactory completion of a recognized correspondence or formal job-related training course at the high school or equivalent level such as that offered by WIN, OEO, CEP, CIVEC or similar programs, for one year only of the required experience;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting nine months or thirty semester hours coursework in an accredited business school, college or university for each year of the required experience;
OR
certification from the State of Iowa Administrative Assistant Certificate Program will substitute for six months of the required experience;
OR
employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the equivalent of eighteen months of full time experience as a resident treatment worker or Clerk–Advanced.
