Location: District 1 Office – 1020 S. 4th Street, Ames, IA
 
Shift: Monday through Friday, 7:45 am - 4:30 pm.  Hours may vary. Some overtime may be required
 
This position will serve a multi-county area in the north part of District 1.  The Engineering Operations
Technician’s (EOT) primary responsibilities are to work directly with utility companies, property
owners, local governments, and others who are seeking permits from the Iowa DOT for the
installation of utilities, construction of accesses and driveways, or to do other work within the
Iowa DOT right of way.
 
Your Team:

  • You will be overseeing the North half of District 1
  • Engineering Operations Technician – In the South half of District 1

What you’ll Do:
The EOT will gather information, conduct field reviews, complete necessary drawings, and process permits.   It is the EOT’s responsibility to ensure that work done under the permit complies with current laws and policies.   Support in making these decisions will be provided by district engineering personnel as needed.
 
Example:

  • Process access permits by meeting with customers to gather information and determine acceptable driveway locations, preparing drawings, filling out permit forms, and approving and denying permits.
  • Process utility permits by meeting with representatives from utility companies who want to install utilities within the highway right of way.
  • Process Work on Right of Way permits.
  • Gather information, prepare drawings, fill out permit forms, and approve or deny permits.
  • Monitor permit work in the field to ensure that all requirements of the permit is being met; halt non-permitted work.
  • Develop off-site detour signing layouts for use by DOT garage personnel for ordering and erecting said signage.
  • Review and resolve complaints/concerns from citizens.

 What You’ll Need:

  • Knowledge and ability to use a computer is required, including computer-aided design
  • Effectively communicate with others, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to complete forms and prepare drawings to document permit applications
  • Knowledge of algebra and geometry and the ability to perform calculations

Lifting:
Ability to occasionally (1-33% of the time) lift/lower, carry and push/pull various amounts of force within the “heavy work” as defined by the US Department of Labor; team lift or mechanical assist recommended for weights over 75 pounds.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid and maintain a valid Iowa Class A Non-commercial Operator’s License.
  • This position requires travel throughout the District and occasionally requires some overnight travel.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in engineering, construction management, or a related field, and experience equal to two years of full-time work in highway construction, inspection, or surveying.
2) A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in engineering, construction management, or a related field equals one year of full-time experience.
3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes two years of full-time work as a Construction Technician or Highway Technician Senior.
