Job Description
The District Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) Engineer position is a Transportation Engineer Senior level position. The selected candidate will primarily be responsible to administer, oversee and coordinate the TSMO activities for the Iowa Department of Transportation District 6, which includes 12 counties, 100+ cities, and the major metro areas of Cedar Rapids, Quad Cities, Dubuque, and Iowa City. The position is new to the district and the selected candidate will have the opportunity to help define and shape this critical position.
The TSMO Engineer will function as the District's lead in traffic engineering and operations for all phases of projects and operations - planning, concepting, design, construction, maintenance and operations. Specific areas of responsibility include traffic incident management, intelligent transportation systems, emergency management, work zones, traffic management plans, special event planning, traffic staging, highway signing, speed studies, integrated corridor management, detours, access management, active transportation and demand management, traffic safety, and TSMO research.
The position will serve on the District Management Team.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) All of the following (a and b):
a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
b. Four years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering.
2) All of the following (a, b, and c):
a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
b. Three years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering; and
c. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or a field closely related to transportation engineering.
3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes 18 months of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer Specialist or Transportation Engineer Manager.

Additional Qualification Requirements
Prior to appointment, applicants must possess active licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board.
